🎓 Nursery Curriculum

The nursery staff work together as a team to create a caring and stimulating environment that encourages each child to develop as an individual.

The aim of nursery education is to develop and extend the range of children’s learning experiences. We encourage all children to become:

• Independent

• Confident

• Eager and enthusiastic learners

Children feel that their contributions are valued and respected.

We are developing the foundation skills, attitudes and expectations that are necessary for them to do well in later life. A careful emphasis is placed upon the nurturing of a child’s social and emotional well-being.

The nursery curriculum aims to:

• Build upon each child’s knowledge and understanding of the world

• Develop literacy and numeracy skills

• Promote creative and physical abilities

Children learn through play and active learning.

Active learning does not mean that children are simply being active — it is learning that engages and challenges their thinking. When children are actively engaged in purposeful experiences, they learn more effectively.

Each child is a partner in the learning process, contributing to planning and shaping their own learning.

How We Promote Learning

We promote learning by:

• Planning clear goals to meet children’s needs

• Observing children at play

• Keeping records to inform future planning

• Sharing progress with parents

• Assessing development across emotional, social, physical and educational areas

Assessment is continuous and based on each child’s individual progress. 

🥗Food, Glorious Food!

🍎 Snack

Morning snack is prepared on site and served on a rolling basis between:

• 9:30am and 10:15am

Children have the opportunity to:

• Self-serve their fruit

• Choose milk or water

We encourage children to take part in preparing snack, helping to develop independence and practical skills.

🍽️ Lunch and High Tea

Lunch and high tea are provided daily by Uryside School kitchen.

• Lunch: served between 11:45am and 1:00pm

• High Tea: served 4.15pm

Meals are designed by Aberdeenshire Council following national guidance, including:

• Setting the Table

• Food Matters

• Scottish Milk and Healthy Snack Scheme

Staff will:

• Support children during mealtimes

• Encourage independence

• Inform parents if a child has not eaten

If your child has any dietary requirements or allergens, please inform nursery staff so appropriate arrangements can be made.

🪥 Toothbrushing

All children attending nursery are offered:

• Free daily toothbrushing

• Dental packs (toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste)

• Oral health education

This programme is provided by Childsmile NHS.

Children are automatically enrolled unless you choose to opt out.
