P5 CAMPING TRIP

At Kellands, we are always looking to provide high-quality outdoor learning interactions and experiences. As such, we have teamed up with our friends at Knockiehill Woodland Centre to provide a mega camping trip for our Primary 5 cohort.

Knockiehill Woodland Centre is set in 45 acres of ancient woodland on the edge of the stunning Cairngorm National Park, North East Scotland. Facilities at KWC are off grid, rustic and natural as possible. We work in symbiosis with our environment. We utilise solar energy for lighting and battery charging and have hot running water on demand.

The objectives of the camp:

To have fun!
To explore the woodland, understand the type of trees and the wildlife within the area.
To gain a sense of independence.
To participate in a number of outdoor woodland-based activities.

The camping trips will be for 2 days / 1 night on the following dates:

P5a - depart: Tuesday 8th June // return: Wednesday 9th June

P5b - depart: Thursday 10th June // return: Friday 11th June

As with all trips, there is a cost. It is £105 per pupil. A suggested payment plan is below and details on how to pay have been emailed to all parents / carers.

Scheme of Manoeuvre:

Arrive/ Departure

Arrive (day 1) 1030hrs – Depart (day 2) 1145hrs.

Activities Include:

The school work closely with Knockiehill Woodland Centre to ensure the delivery of a wide range of activities that are engaging and fun for the children. Activities are weather dependent but include Games, Bushcraft , Survival Skills, Nature Crafts, Shelter building, Team challenges, Archery, Axe throwing, Yoga & cooking.

Coordinating Instructions: All activities will take place at KWC.
Equipment List. See downloadable Kit List above. KWC will provide: Tents, food for all meals and snacks, bulk water supply and extra equipment such as fire lighting, tools and first aid equipment. Any safety equipment will also be provided such as outdoor gloves.
Medical. There will be a minimum of 2 members of staff on duty at all times. All staff at KWC are qualified first aiders.
Emergencies. Dependant on severity & situation, 999 will be called. Next of kin informed. If safe to do so casualty will be recovered back to KWC carpark for extraction to local medical centre. A list of NOK contacts will be held by a member of staff at all times.

Feeding. KWC will provide a variety of snacks and fruit available throughout the day. An evening meal will be provided (example - Pasta, jacket potatoes with toppings, sausages, soup, bread rolls, bread sticks and fruit). Breakfast (example) will be toast, pancakes, crumpets, croissants with toppings and fruit. Confirmation of dietary requirements should be requested through the organiser no later than 10 days prior to the camp. Individuals should discuss bringing any food items with staff (this should only be for specific dietary requirements). Lunch will be a basic packed lunch similar to those from school.
Washing facilities / Ablutions. Basic toilet and washing facilities suitable for 2 nights away from home. KWC toilets are composting toilets. Washing facilities will be individual wash basins with access to cold and hot water. Please ensure if any children wear contact lenses that they bring a set of glasses with them. We have facilities for disposing of any sanitary items.
Accommodation. We have a number of large bell tents at KWC set up. Each bell tent has solar lighting (think glamping), a small square table, bin and some floor cushions. Individuals should bring a roll matt / yoga matt / camping matt and sleeping bag plus pillow. We do have fairy lights and solar lighting but an individual torch is also a good idea. Any adults / staff will be accommodated close to the bell tents in either of our 18ft yurts or an individual tent. Children can bring extra blankets and comfort items.
Communication. We understand that for some, this may be their first experience of a night away from home. Phone signal is extremely limited at KWC so your child may not be able to phone you directly. However, the staff can move to a location with phone signal if required to contact a parent. If you are trying to reach the staff please be patient as we often do not get messages straight away.

Mobile phones are not permitted on the trip.
