Below you will find the most up to date Parent Guidebook, Privacy Notice and Parent Handbook. You may be asking yourself what is the difference between the Parent Guidebook and the Parent Handbook, and that would be a perfectly reasonable question to ask!
The Parent Guidebook is an abridged version of the Parent Handbook where we have pulled out the most important aspects of the full Handbook. We are required by the local authority to publish the full handbook on the website but it is more than likely that all the information that you will ever need will be in the Parent Guidebook, so please, if you only ever read one, then plump for the Parent Guidebook. Promoting Positive Behaviour
At Kellands School and nursery, we are committed to promoting positive behaviour by promoting attachment led, trauma informed approaches to support our children and young people. At Kellands School we promote emotional wellbeing and mental health as an overarching attainment strategy and create a learning environment which takes account of the whole child and their mental, emotional and psychological readiness to learn. Marcus (2016) argues that to close the attainment gap, we must first put the child at the centre and ensure that we meet the child’s individual needs. Curriculum for Excellence cannot be delivered without high quality learning, teaching and assessment.
Fundamental to this are good relationships within a positive ethos and a climate of mutual respect and trust. This should be based on our shared values of together we are respected, responsible, included and kind.
This policy is designed to help meet this aspiration. In addressing what is the core of the education process its significance is clear. It has implications for all members of staff, as well as for pupils and their families.
It is intended that this policy be used in the following ways:
● a reference to the philosophy behind effective learning and teaching
● an indication of current thinking on good practice
● an aid for self-evaluation in learning and teaching

MOBILE DEVICE POLICY
In Britain today, 24% of 5-7 year olds now own a smartphone, by 12, 97% do. When parents first started giving smartphones to their children, we didn’t know the impact they would have. Research has shown that the younger a child gets a smartphone, the worse their mental health will be.
Our Parent Survey in April 2024 showed that the primary usage of smartphones was for communication with home, to make calls or to send text messages. All things a simple ‘brick phone’ could do. In line with this, as a school, we believe smartphones with unrestricted internet access and social media are not suitable for children under 16.
As most children spend more time in school than any other place outside their home, our Smartphone Free Kellands School Policy reflects the evidence that has been provided on this page and has been designed to minimise the impact of smartphones in your children’s lives. Please take the time to familiarise yourself with the policy as from August 2024 Kellands school will be entirely smartphone free, except in special circumstances and with special permission from the Headteacher.
